Jay is a category 3 racer, LGBRC ride leader and team captain. He specializes in road racing and time trials.

Jay participated in triathlons and cross country in high school and then went to Purdue University where he met friends who got him interested in bicycle racing.
At Purdue, he raced road for four seasons and raced mountain bikes for two season, and became involved in the leadership of the bicycle racing club. He qualified for the 1999 Collegiate National Championships in Greenville, South Carolina.

He left Indiana to take a job in the San Francisco Bay Area. Jay joined the LGBRC in the summer of 1999 after meeting Michael Rowe whom he met while out riding his bike.

Jay considers his greatest cycling achievements so far to be riding 271 miles in 17 hours and 25 minutes to break the Purdue University Bicycle Racing Club's record for the longest one-day ride, and racing his first race in 1999 after a near-death wreck in a bicycle race in 1997. A renaissance man, when Jay's not riding his bike, he is an avid reader. He also enjoys cooking, drawing, weight lifting, surfing and snowboarding and poetry.
