Jon Erskine
Jon grew up in Los Angeles and caught the cycling
bug in 1984 when the Olympics were
held there. He was 13 at the time, and he had
a friend who got a bike. They would take turn
racing it around the block as if they were Olympians.
The
next year he watched the Tour de France on TV.
He says, "I couldn't believe the scale
of it all: the distance, the mountains, the
drama of duty-bound LeMond giving the victory
to Hinault. What a bizarre sport!" He got
a Nishiki Prestige that summer.
When asked his
greatest cycling achievement, he answers, "I
consider my 2000 season as a whole my greatest
cycling achievement. I'm proud of the work I
did to help others, inspired by the selfless
help my team mates gave me, and personally pleased
that I finally developed a sprint and placed
2nd at the district criterium, and 3rd at the
district road race."
His thoughts on bicycle racing: "Racing
is very humbling. It is so hard and takes
so much steady work and patience. You have
to think long-term. When things come together
though, it's sublime."
